Do you feel it too? That discomfort rising inside when someone imparts their clever wit on you. Not just any kind of wisdom, but the one that makes you feel small, in a here-you-go, punch-to-the-stomach kind of way. A covert little criticism implying that you might not be doing something right or may have the wrong ideas. Your first reaction is disbelief. Followed by denial. How can they be so rude to come out with such a comment? Why can’t they be more tactful or careful with their words? Then your anger takes over, and you shout from the top of your voice, “Did I even ask for your opinion?” Unfortunately, what seemed like shouting was just a thought. That witty retort you wanted to scream at them? Never left your lips. You only disagreed with them in your mind.
Sometimes other people’s words can stir up very painful emotions in us. Do you remember when you felt so disempowered by someone’s remarks that you froze on the spot and couldn’t think of anything to say back to them? Or maybe you did say something, but it was so lame that you wished afterward you’d kept your mouth shut and just sucked it all up. This happened to me recently when I was helping someone and, instead of gratitude, I received verbal abuse. I learned a valuable lesson from it that I would like to share with you.
It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Stumbling through life without a clear sense of direction. Wondering day after day if it’s ever going to get better. After all, perpetual joy and a meaningful life are only for the rich and famous. The idea of fulfilment seems so far-fetched given the mundaneness of an ordinary day. But you know that anything is possible, right? Could it be that with a little thought, the day will come when you’ll enjoy the colors of the rainbow, regardless of whether you’ve reached your pot of gold or not?
It’s deeply frustrating, isn’t it? You’re on a roll in life, but an unexpected change in your health alters your path. Not a little change either. Something significant that shocks you to the core. Something significant that you feel powerless when you realize things won’t be the same. A period of uncertainty and confusion follows while you’re waiting for an answer. Unsurprisingly, you feel a mix of emotions. You appear strong, but occasionally you feel down and find things just a little too much to cope with. Your self-confidence wanes, and you spend many hours dwelling on the what-ifs. Can you possibly bring your previous self back and embrace the change, however difficult it seems?
You know the value of establishing sustainable habits. You’re told how regular habits will make your life a breeze, and by the power of repetition, you’ll achieve amazing results over time with virtually no effort. But what if you struggle to start and maintain a set of behaviors that you know would help you along your path? What if you tried and failed many times before? It wears you down. You’re tired of feeling like a failure each time you don’t stick to yet another good (but perhaps unrealistic) habit. That is definitely what happened to me. I’ve never considered myself a good habits person. Looking back on my life, I would often judge myself for being lazy. When I was younger, I would stay in bed as long as I could, sometimes my feet not hitting the ground until lunchtime on weekends.
Do you know that feeling? That urge calling you to do better. To establish firm goals and go after each in a predestined, unfaltering and decisive manner. But something holds you back. You can’t quite put your finger on it, yet something inside you is stopping you from manifesting the greatest version of yourself. And while working out this problem, life is passing you by. But it isn’t your fault. Schools, parents, and peers don’t teach you the inner workings of the mind — the device responsible for your most spectacular successes and ugliest failures. You see, most often than not, the way you think about things is the root cause of your unhappiness.
Warning: most people have a misconception about the meaning of the word, 'introvert'. Having been associated for so long as the opposite of 'extrovert', which is considered to be the ideal and dominant personality type of our age. Read this book to gain a thorough understanding of what it means to be an introvert, to accept yourself just the way you are and make a permanent shift in your mindset about what you are capable to achieve. It's no secret I'm a huge fan of Susan Cain and this book has helped me immensely to be okay with being quiet. I'm now actually proud to be an introvert and use this trait to my advantage.
Does this sound familiar? You’re smart, caring and considerate, yet you struggle to interact with people on a meaningful level. You’re also aware that to get anywhere in life, you need people on your side, or at least have the ability to deal with them effectively. But you just don’t seem to be able to do it. And it’s not that you haven’t tried. You’ve read all the books on successful communication and facing your fears. But when it comes to practising those wisdoms in real life, you turn to jelly. You become painfully aware of your every move and physically freeze on the spot. You cannot utter a word and you feel extremely embarrassed. And you get the feeling that other people notice your inadequacy and judge you for it.
The idea of finding peace of mind in your life sounds simple enough. Get a reasonably good job that offers you security, find a fantastic partner to settle down with, throw in a couple of kids, add a few treats here and there, and be happy forever. What more could you possibly want out of life without being too selfish? But, instead, the career that looks so perfect from the outside, bores you to tears after a few years. Your partner no longer 'gets' you, and you're having petty arguments endlessly. And keeping the roof over your head is like a mental ball and chain around you.
